Because I’ve worked on so many films in marketing and advertising over the years, way ahead of the release, they’re usually spoiled far in advance for me. It’s just the way it is for me and I’m used to it. So now here comes JOKER, and I really had no idea what to make of this film going blindly into it. But something about the look and the imagery captured my curiosity. About a month before it opened, I was challenged by a friend to enter a competition at the Talenthouse.com site and design an advertising promo for the film. The Talenthouse site works with Warner Brothers by giving any designer the chance to enter their work for competition. About 10 designs are chosen to be used for promotion, outside of the main campaign. So I entered not knowing anything about the JOKER film other than the trailer, the synopsis or the photos. Those chosen are eligible to win up to $2000 for their designs if they are used for promotion…so I entered twice without a clue what the film would be about. Imagine the thoughts that ran through my head as I created two key art designs for this film…it’s an approach I’ve never experienced before. In my line of work, we’re told everything and even given a script in most cases so we know what to design against, but nothing like that for JOKER. About 4600 designers entered and I didn’t make the cut, not even close. But I was very proud of my work considering I achieved the look and feel of the film once I saw it opening weekend. Here’s my page at Talenthouse so you can see just how JOKER inspired me and my design.
