Ciao, cinemaphiles!
Guess what? You voted and you voted right! This week Ian and Dave watched the flopperoo John Carter, and had some thoughts. Why didn’t it succeed? Was it any good? Could it be better? Why can’t Disney do a better job marketing their films? (Yes, that’s right, we’re looking at you too, Lone Ranger!)
Have you asked yourself these questions too? Well, let Ian and Dave fansplain it for you.
Thanks for listening.

Wow, I saw this movie in a theatre but I stored next to nothing about the plot in my memory other than John getting transported to Mars and getting caught up in some local squabbles in a sandy place with some weird-looking aliens. At the time I thought it was goofy but okay. I’m not a big fan of mixing live action actors with CGI characters so maybe that’s why I didn’t get that into it.
Dang. I missed the vote for the Prestige. That plot I remember!
Late reply but I’m glad you guys did this movie. I’d been meaning to watch it to see how true it is that it’s better than how the marketing made it seem, but never got around to it until last night because I wanted to listen to this Fansplainers episode. And the legends are true! All of it! I really liked it and the marketing definitely did it dirty, and the story wasn’t what I expected it to be like at all. The title and posters are horrendous and I’d like to see a fully-painted poster akin to the book cover.
Interesting note: both lead actors were in the horrible X-Men Origins: Wolverine film (John Carter’s actor played Gambit, and Dejah Thoris’s actor played Silverfox, Wolverine’s girlfriend). They were much better in this film and I think they got screwed over by this bombing. They should be in the MCU movies by now.
I was surprised to hear Ian’s seen this multiple times, because his tone while going through the plot sounded like he had a lot of disdain for it. I kept thinking “geez, does Ian hate this movie? I thought he said he liked it!” Maybe he was tired this week!
This was a breath of fresh air because I desperately needed to see a good movie. I’ve been watching a lot of truly horrible films during the lockdown — I recently went through the Twilight quadrology, the 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, and Sucker Punch. My soul has been dying with each film and Sucker Punch made my brain leave my body and it was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen in my life, so thank you, John Carter, for giving me life again.
