Dept. of Corections:
“Willesden Green” was not a b-side, but instead an album cut from the Kinks’ so-so Percy soundtrack album.

We talked about it during the show so here Emitt Rhodes singing live against a backing track on that show about grey whistle collections:

I encourage all of my fellow Listening Party brothers and sisters to ask for their own Gary Usher Zodiac reading from The Astrology Album! It’s fun! I’m amazed how closely that came to describing me, I’d have to put it at around 89% accurate as far as the personality characteristics go. I have no propensity when it comes to making money or economics as the reading said but if I take a page out of Socrates’ book and “Know Thyself” I’d have to say Gary Usher was mostly dead on. I do wear blue but only on the darker side, like navy and grayish tones. That was fun, Thanks for playing the Sagittarius reading from Gary Usher!
It was great to hear Beck played, I wasn’t a fan of his when he broke onto the music scene but I’ve found myself enjoying his music as I find more of it, he’s quite an innovative artist.
When you were discussing nicknames, I remembered a conversation I once had with my late Father-In-Law. His name was Hugh but since he was a kid most everyone knew him as “Buddy”, a nickname his three sisters gave him. We discussed how nicknames used to be much more common years ago and how they stuck more often than they do now. Hugh, or Buddy, explained how they were meant as an affectionate label for each other and not as derogatory. He had a friend with one testicle who everyone affectionately knew as “One-Ball.” Nobody’s feelings were hurt and everyone remained friends. Most of my Brother’s closest friends call him “Chainsaw” or just “Saw” to this day because he used to make his own horror films when he was in high school and college. I have an Uncle who’s real name is Donald but very few people even know that since my Grandfather nicknamed him “Bosco” when he was a child. He goes by Bosco just as commonly as any of the Marx Brothers were with their nicknames that stuck with each of them.
I have no nickname though, just the derived “Eddie” or “Ed” from the name Edward. I had one friend who wanted to call me “Chuck” based on my middle name “Charles” but I shut that shit down really fast. Only Peppermint Patty is allowed to get away with that.
Special thanks for this episode, folks. I thought the mix flowed particularly well, all the way from Felt – who were great, very Talking Heads-ish – to Super Furry Animals, which, as Mary pointed out, was TOTALLY a country song! The Field Music track in particular was beautiful.
One reason this episode went down particularly well with me was that it dropped a day after I’d had surgery to repair a hernia I’ve been carrying around for a few years. Apart from taking a short walk, all I could do all day was lie around in bed or on the couch, so your company was, truly, a great comfort and helped set me up for a recovery that is progressing nicely.
A little Lyle Lovett story. A few years ago, my friend Howard and I had a gig in a local village hall as a guitar and fiddle duo. At my suggestion, we worked up an arrangement of Lovett’s One-eyed Fiona, one of my favourite songs of his. The gig went well and we were chatting afterwards with a couple who were neighbours of Howard’s. The man, who I also knew slightly, was highly complimentary of our performance, but the woman was very quiet. It was only after they’d left that Howard mentioned her name was Fiona and, well… I reckon you can figure out the rest.
Love it!
Awesome show. Love Beck.
Please play my horoscope song (Scorpio) so I can finally figure out who I am supposed to be.
