Hello, partygoers! Happy New Year and welcome to a special episode of the Listening Party.
This week we are listening to a playlist of some of Dave’s favourite albums of 2019. He has said that he doesn’t want it to be called a “Best of 2019” – more of a “this is some of his favourite music he heard last year.” So, if you’re curious what Dave has been listening to lately rather than our usual five years ago or so, pull up a chair, get comfy and let’s have a party!
Here’s what’s on Dave’s list:
- Omni – “Sincerely Yours” – Networker, 2019
- Weyes Blood – “Something to Believe” – Titanic Rising, 2019
- The Pernice Brothers – “Lullabye” – Spread the Feeling, 2019
- Modern Nature – “Nature” – How to Live, 2019
- White Denim – “NY Money” – Side Effects, 2019
- Aldous Harding – “The Barrel” – Designer, 2019
- Cate Le Bon – “Here It Comes Again” – Reward, 2019
- Garcia Peoples – “High Noon Violence” – Natural Facts, 2019
- Shannon Lay – “Death Close By” – August, 2019
- Julia Jacklin – “Don’t Know how to Keep Loving You” – Crushing, 2019
Bonus tracks:
- Mountain Goats – “Younger” – In League with Dragons, 2019
- The Unthanks – “The Night is Darkening Around Me” – Lines Pt.3 – Emily Brontë, 2019
- Hobo Johnson – “Subaru Crosstrek XV” – The Fall of Hobo Johnson, 2019
Thanks for listening. Party on!

I can’t get enough of those beautiful female vocals, such a great playlist to start off the New Year! One of the songs sounded as if it had a George Harrison harmony going on in the background, I’d have to go back and listen again to pick it out. I think I sometimes lean towards female vocalists, it’s almost calming to me and puts me at ease…great stuff especially the first half.
I was one of the listeners yelling BRAD DOURIF at you! He’s such an intense actor! Our Dallas convention circuit had him as a guest years ago along with John Rhys-Davies, Sean Astin and Billy Boyd for a Lord of the Rings show. Dourif had grown out huge sideburns and a beard while attending the show, when someone asked him if he was growing it for a role in something. He replied it was for a western series on HBO, but that was about all. The series he spoke of turned out to be “Deadwood” in which Dourif played the town doctor.
Happy New Year! Had to scrap the Peanut Duck I was working on, it just didn’t look right at all…more like a Peanut mutant with no character at all, so I’m hard at work to make him look right. I’m a perfectionist and my own worst enemy…
I could never not love this podcast! Without Sneaky Dragon Listening Party, I would probably have missed almost all of these beautiful songs, so thanks again, Dave and Mary for your choices, info and insights.
Weyes Blood, White Denim and Julia Jacklin really stood out at first listen, but everyone on this mixtape sounded pretty great in my ears. Aldous Harding was the one that was a bit meh first time round, but totally shone through as a fantastic track on second listen.
The bonus tracks were more mixed. Mary’s choice of Hobo Johnson was great fun, but I couldn’t get excited by either Mountain Goats or the Unthanks. Sorry…
Dave, I greatly enjoyed your thoughts on how great short songs are, followed a few minutes later by wishing that the White Denim track had been longer. You’re right on both counts!
Along with Ed, I was also shouting BRAD DOURIF, incidentally. Maybe you’ll hear us better when you get your regular microphones back. I’m pretty sure that’s how it works.
Thanks for The Unthanks. I hadn’t heard of them before. I thought the haunting quality of their vocals really suited Emily Bronte’s poetry. I’ve been watching more of their songs on YouTube and enjoy their close harmonies and their approach to traditional folk music.
