Hello, fellow music maniacs! This week on the Listening Party, we stick to the folksy direction of our last episode as we listen to Side 2 of Stephanie Felice’s mixtape.
Although we tried to keep things from getting too folksy, we come dangerously close to holding hands around a fire and singing “Kumbaya” – a fate worse than death!
Anyway, come on in to the Sneaky Dragon Rumpus Room, find a comfy seat and have a listen with us as we hear:
- Dillard & Clark – “Polly” – Through the Morning, Through the Night, 1969
- Jeffrey Frederick and the Clamtones feat. Jill Gross – “Singing to the Dentist” – Spiders in the Moonlight, 1977
- Samantha Crain – “Kathleen” – Under Branch and Thorn and Tree, 2015
- Caetano Veloso – “It’s a Long Way” – Transa, 1972
- Blitzen Trapper – “Dragon’s Song” – Destroyer of the Void, 2010
- Michael Hurley – “Automatic Slim and the Fat Boys” – Snockgrass, 1979
- Joanna Newsom – “The Book of Right-On” – The Milk-Eyed Mender, 2004
- Joy of Cooking – “The War You Left” – Closer to the Ground, 1971
- Wilco – “Muzzle of Bees” – A Ghost Is Born, 2004
Thanks for listening.
Here’s a fun bit of live Joanna Newsom really giving those finger muscles a workout.

Thanks so much for posting this video. She reminds me of Kate Bush, and I just got her Have One On Me (2010) 3CD. I love being turned onto new music!
Hey Dave, I caught your message towards the end of the show….NO RUSH at all on the playlist I sent over. I realize you’re a busy Dragon, especially with all you had going on with the 400th Episode of the flagship podcast. If you need any clarification as to why I chose any of those songs, just let me know….
GREAT “Dedrick Classic” as you and Mary continue to roll along with such an array of musical choices. I’ve recommended the podcast to several of my music-aficionado friends that they give Sneaky Dragon Listening Party a listen, there’s so much to absorb and learn from every episode!!
I’ve also fell into the Wilco trap with more than a few of my friends. They’re avid fans and have urged me to listen to more than just their popular work….but I just can’t seem to hop onboard the Wilco bandwagon. I like it well enough, just not as crazy for it as some of my friends are.
Whew, that was a close one, Dedricks.
Although I agree that this was one of the most enjoyable mixtapes so far – maybe even the best – there was one song that just didn’t land with me on first listen. You got it – Caetano Veloso. In particular, the repetition of ‘It’s a long way’ jarred with the rest of the song in a way my dutifully popped-up ears found annoying.
So when Mary said that anyone who didn’t love that one wasn’t welcome and should just leave the Stu-stu-studio/rumpus room, I figured my listening partygoing days were over. Oh well, all things must pass.
However, before packing up my ethically-sourced bean bag and assorted vegan ales, chips and dips, I followed my customary practice and gave the whole episode a second listen. You know what? I was wrong. It’s a great song. Can I come back in now?
I think this may be the first episode where I’ve really loved every song, from Dillard and Clark (of Dillard and Clark fame) all the way to Wilco. Sequencing was excellent too, as usual. Hard to pick a standout from such a brilliant collection, but Jeffrey Frederick and the Clamtones might just edge it. I loved the feel, the lyric, and Jill Gross’s singing. Ask me tomorrow, though, and I’d be just as likely to opt for Dillard and Clark, or Michael Hurley, or Joanna Newsome, or, well, you know…
Really intrigued to hear if Mary’s responses next time match Dave’s expectations.
Oh, and Dave, I know you know this, being a world-renowned Beatles expert and all, but the first track on Please Please Me is I Saw Her Standing There. You were just checking we were paying attention, weren’t you?
Great show.
‘Polly’ is wonderful – love Gene Clark.
‘Singing to the Dentist’ isn’t a song I love, but it tells a good story, I’ll give it that
‘Kathleen’ was a new one for me. Liked it.
‘It’s a Long Way’ – not my favourite.
Blitzen Trapper, Michael Hurley and Joanna Newsome are all ones I liked, and have seen them all live
‘The War you Left’ – not my favourite.
Wilco – loved it.
Thanks again, you too. Good show.
Hi Dave and Mary! Been slowly catching up on episodes of Listening Party (as you can see I’ve still got a while to go) and enjoyed this one quite a bit. A visit to the Hurley/Frederick/Holy Modal Rounders extended universe is always a delight! I also loved hearing more Caetano Veloso (his song ‘Nine Out of Ten’ off of Transa is perhaps my favourite song ever!)
I was wondering if Dave ever gets to reveal his Top 5 Dragon songs at some point. Although I can sympathize with Mary’s plight and heartily endorse her choice of fresh plums and reading over an extended podcast, I would still be very interested in hearing Dave’s list of dragon songs as his Top 5’s are always enlightening!
Thanks for a great show and sorry for the years late comment on this episode.
