Man, I love Joanna Newsom, thanks for reminding me of that. I can highly recommend her concerts – it blew my mind experiencing the way she performs and play the songs live. Amazing.

    1. Yes! As Mary and I mentioned during the show, we saw Joanna Newsom on her Ys tour and it was quite magical – even though we were sitting on really uncomfortable pews!

By the way, you may have won Fastest Reply Ever. You can’t even have finished the show yet! (Unless time travel is involved.)

Listening while typing! I saw her at an intimate concert with Robin Pecknold as the opening act. Seats near the front which was perfect. Pecknold was a bit of disappointment, but Newsom was fantastic.

  3. Another great show! Good laughs, too.
Loved the Cardinal song; could have done without the Unit 4 X 2 song; Joanna Newsom is definitely an acquired taste, but I have learned to love her; The Pussycats: I don’t think I’d ever heard that one before, and I wasn’t keen on it to start, but soon got over that and really liked it once it got rolling; The Young Knives – now there’s a great song; Pavement – although I like this song, and have always really liked Pavement, I think I like them a little less now after hearing about how difficult he is to deal with; Morrissey – yup, great song; The Free Design – not my thing; Parquet Courts – that is an absolutely fantastic song – loved it; Denim – I’m with Mary on this one – not my fave.
Anyway, looking forward to the next installment. Keep up the good work, you two!

  4. Excellent show! So far, Thomas Callaway, Disc 2 is by far my favorite. It’s a nice mixture and on disc 2, side 2, only one song from 1971. The Listening Party reminds me of college radio. You hear a little bit of everything. There’s no set format, other than good tunes, and there are always a few surprises. Great work!
Also, thanks for sharing my Desert Island List. It’s funny, I feared it would be too mainstream and there were more than a few David and Mary didn’t know. Just goes to show how much music, and good music, there is out there.
Mary, thanks for the tip on Colter Wall. I agree with you on Imaginary Appalachia, it being my favorite also. And you definitely need to get to Nashville. Walking down Broadway, music coming from one club after another fills the air.
    Lovin’ the Listening Party!

  5. Hello Dedricks!
I am so enjoying the Listening Parties. I admit though, that by the time I get to write a comment, I’ve forgotten most of the songs… so, some notes…
I thought I knew of a lot of bands, but I’ve never heard of Big Star.
Mary, your entertainment time would be sooo much better spent watching “This Is Spinal Tap” than reruns of The Office. Tremendously funny film!
I loved “Dressed in Black” by the Pussycats. I love that girl group sound and Shadow Morten.
Dave, I enjoyed your riff about the Brill Building/ 1650 Broadway songwriters. They were so wonderful, but it wasn’t all guys. Tremendous women–Cynthia Weil with Barry Mann, Carole King with Gerry Coffin, and Ellie Greenwich with Jeff Barry, were all a huge part of writing those hits. Love it!
Yes- We have alleys (pronounced “ellies”) here in Chicago.
I also avoid calling on the phone whenever possible. I’ll always text or email instead. My phone calls always begin with greeting their Hello” with “I’m sorry, am I interrupting something?” (Maybe I should have been Canadian?)
I loved the Parquet Quartz song.
    Keep up the delightful listening!
    Danny

  6. Sorry, I commented before I heard the whole mix-tape! Interesting to me that Denim’s “I’m Against the 80s” sounds to me like one of my favorite 80s bands– Dire Straits with Mark Knopfler–at least the vocals do. During your discussion of Bob’s Island mix, you talked about New Orleans when Bob mentioned Beale Street. Beale Street is in Memphis–he was referring to Memphis Blues– not New Orleans.
    Carry on, and Good Day!
    Danny
