Sneaky Dragon Listening Party Ep. 1

Hola, Sneakers and music lovers everywhere! Welcome to the first episode of our Listening Party! This podcast is an attempt to document the 400+ songs that made up the Sneaky Dragon Mixtape Project undertaken by Dave starting in 2015. Did you send in a blank CD-R to get a mixtape? Have you ever wondered why you were sent the songs you got on your mixtape? Did you ever wonder what songs other people got on their mixtapes? Well, we hope we can answer these questions and many more on our first spin-off from the Sneaky Dragon podcast!

So, join Dave and his daughter Mary as they sit on the floor by the old record player, chatting and listening to some great songs from Dave’s extensive music collection.

This week, we take a look at “Side One” of Liam Penton’s mixtape. The final selection was burned to disc on the 11th of November, 2015. Unfortunately, during our talk, we missed some songs that had mysteriously disappeared from the iTunes playlist we used for reference during the taping, but fortunately, they were recorded in our notes and on the playlist CD cover so we’ll discuss those songs in Episode 2. (The missing songs are marked with an asterisk.)

Here are the songs from Side One of Liam’s mixtape:

  1. A.C. Newman – “On the Table” (from The Slow Wonder, 2004)
  2. The Five Americans – “Western Union” (from Western Union, 1967)*
  3. Roxy – “Love, Love, Love” (from Roxy, 1969)
  4. Denny Laine – “Say You Don’t Mind” (from Acid Drops, Spacedust & Flying Saucers, 2001)*
  5. Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks – “Ramp of Death” (from Pig Lib, 2003)
  6. Otis Clay – “That’s How It Is When You’re In Love” (from Testify!, 1967)
  7. Judy Kelly – “Window” (from Wayfaring Strangers: Ladies from the Canyon, 2006)
  8. The Ballroom – “Spinning, Spinning, Spinning” (from Magic Time, 1967)
  9. The Move – “Beautiful Daughter” (from Shazam, 1969)
  10. The Meat Puppets – “Up on the Sun” (from Up on the Sun, 1985)
  11. Local Rabbits – “West Island Rockers” (from You Can’t Touch This, 1996)

  1. Well, that was an unexpected delight! Thank you so much, Dave and Mary.

On the topic of music sequencing – as I’m sure Dave knows, The Beatles’ first proper manager, Allan Williams, reportedly said that a show should be like a ‘W’. You start high, let things calm down, rise again, fall again, then up again for a big finish. Like most rules, it’s fun to break, but a pretty good guide.

Really looking forward to more of these. As well as the great music, the warmth and humour between the two of you is wonderful.

    1. Thanks so much! That means a lot to Mary and me. I was a little nervous about this – stepping away from my Ian-shaped safety net.

I actually didn’t know that about Allan Williams. Luckily his last name didn’t start with an “O” or they’d never end!

  2. Love this new side series.
How’s about a Christmas music mix tape episode next month?
Otis Clay and the Move were my favorite two from this episode but enjoyed them all overall.

  3. This episode was great!

    – I was smiling through the whole thing.

    – I like Phyllis’s opening, feels like MBMBaM.

    – It’s unfortunate that “Western Union” didn’t get covered in this episode. It’s one of those songs that get stuck in my head randomly every now and then.

    – I think the songs you picked were mostly great, but I agree the track sequencing could have used some work. I usually just listen on shuffle.

    – I was singing along to all these songs, but my favourites from this side have to be “On The Table” and “Say You Don’t Mind”.

    – I like that the opening/closing theme is the Sneaky Dragon theme from another perspective.

    1. Hooray! We’re happy you liked it! I’ll tell Mary about your My Brother… comparison. She’s a big fan of that podcast.

You’ll be glad to hear that we recorded the second episode today and covered “Western Union” and “Say You Don’t Mind” in some detail.

And thank you for picking up the relation between the Sneaky Dragon theme and Listening Party theme! Heh heh. I was pretty pleased with myself when I thought of that while pondering it at work. That song never stops giving.

  4. Wonderful show!. Having a daughter Mary’s age, I really enjoyed the interplay between you two. Mary has a great sense of humor, and a sweet voice.
As always, Dave, your podcast was full of great info and trivia about the bands and the recordings. Thank You! Almost all of it was new music for me, so that was great. (I could have done with out the vocals on the Local Rabbits song, but hey… )
I look forward to the second half….
    Keep the party going!
    Danny

  5. Listening to the listening party just as you suggested, safe & warm under blankets —- please make as many of these as you can – you two bring the music alive – and add your personal sweetness to the mix
