Sneaky Dragon Episode 393

Hola, Sneakers. Welcome to Episode 393 of Sneaky Dragon – the podcast that never quits except when we’re tired. And even then, we never quit quitting!

This week on the show: no thanks to non-listeners; podcast inundation; technology unfair to fogeys; the tech trap; the Netflix problem; cable and me; superhero channels; eat your friends; dressing your friend; visible meat; inappropriate music choices; take the buyout; daily deli doings; fixing the 7-layer dip; basketballed; Ronald McDonal’d; Ian’s birthday; virtual enthusiasm; virtual sound; the Virtual Generation; bundts and other cakes; the secret life of pies; our dazzling food; first pedicure; foot shame; irregular check-ups; the diagnosis is in: we’re old; boobs; actors should get plastic surgery; seeing Dep Red; rated X-Men; Question of the Week – Sneakers respond; blame it on a dance step; and, finally, making yourself like music.

Thanks for listening.

Dario Argento’s Deep Red. The trailer leaves out the sense of humour that runs through the film.
We might talk about this on The Fansplainers!

  1. I have a phobia about poisoning others with improperly-cooked meat dishes so I usually bring cookies or squares to a potluck. For a special dinner at home, I’ll make a shrimp fettuccine.

Happy Father’s Day, Dave! Despite cancer’s attempts to kill you and medical science’s efforts to render you sterile, you procreated. And then you did it again! Now go and have an annual physical and get some lab work done. Toe fungus can be a sign of underlying issues.

Speaking of fatherhood, I have a question for you and Ian. I was at a baby shower yesterday and we played a game where we had to unscramble a list of baby-related words. When the answers were read out, a lot of the guys including the dad-to-be were mystified by the term “receiving blanket.” Quick, without looking it up, do you know what one is and what it’s used for?

      1. Yep, you can use it for that. It’s any small blanket you “receive” the baby into, like after you give them a bath, or while you’re or burping or changing them. Some people use them as a cover-up when they’re breastfeeding in public to create a private space.

  2. Hey chaps,

Love the podcast! However this week’s lengthy discussion of Dave’s foot fungus was the most stomach-churning since Jason Dedrick’s equally lengthy discussion of his Christmas reflux. (See ep 370.) Sorry gents, but it left me too queasy to answer this week’s food-related question.

Dave! Please! Listen to Ian. Go see a doctor and get that business sorted!

    Love your work.
    Mick

    1. Thanks, Mick. I just want to make it clear to listeners that I don’t have a foot fungus. I have a fungus growing under my big toenail on one foot. It’s yucky, of course, but not as yucky as full-on foot fungus!

    Hi Ian and David!
First, Happy Birthday to you, Ian. Sounds like you had a really grand day, even if the bundt cake wasn’t exactly the way you wanted. Probably tasted fantastic anyway!

Second, to answer the food questions: Like you, David, I am a baker of pies, all types, and always use my own crust. We grow a lot of blueberries on our property, so blueberry pie is a staple. Also, we pick blackberries in the woods through July, and mix them with blueberries, half and half, and call it “black and blue” pie. It’s a tasty combination. But the one I like to do for guests (and my husband and grandson, who say it is the very best) is a pie with cream cheese and blueberry filling, topped with more blueberries and a blueberry glaze. We freeze a lot of berries so can enjoy these even in Winter when you just need a reminder of summer!
I’m kind of embarrassed to say what I fix for myself on the rare occasions I am alone, but I’ll say it anyway in the interest of being truthful: either Kraft mac n cheese (just the cheap box kind) or a frozen pot pie…the kind in those little individual pans, cooked in the oven, not microwave. I do a lot of cooking so the special thing is when I don’t have to!

As always, I’m a great fan of this podcast, along with all of your others, and am proud to be a “Sneaker”! Thanks for taking the time to put these out for all of us fans!

Hi guys. My go-to potluck dish is Stuffed Jalapenos. It’s easy to make, and you won’t have other people bringing the same thing, like you will with potato salad. Take a jalapeno, cut it in half, or better yet, cut the top third off, take out the guts, stuff it with a mixture of cream cheese and mozzarella cheese and anything else you want to throw into the mixture. I usually add chopped onions and chopped olives. If there are no vegetarians, I’ll throw in sausage or chorizo. You can jazz it up any old way. Bake until they’re done. And you can make it days ahead of time and freeze them.
In fall, my garden usually produces too much, including the jalapenos that I grow, so I’ll slice them and clean them, and freeze the jalapeno “boats” for use in winter and spring.

  5. My go-to dish to impress people is my not-actually chicken pot pie. It’s your basic chicken pot pie recipe, but instead of cooking it in a pie, I put everything in a casserole dish and cover it in a layer of dough. It turns into a thick layer of biscuit, and it goes really well with the filling. I’ve probably done it for potlucks too many times, but it’s really tasty.
