Hubbi, frubiends! (And a select few of you will get that.) Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never seems to end. This week Ian is a travellin’ man, but has taken the time to record this episode before flying off again. He and Dave have time to discuss jetlag; more talk about video games – especially the really old ones (Battle tank? Defender? Space Invaders? Anyone? Hello?); more talk about Raiders of the Lost Ark and that gosh darn snake on the plane; Dave has some suggestions on how to improve the Rocky franchise: Ian has some thoughts about Inside Out and calls out Dave for his favourite Pixar movie; Dave brings up Jim Varney and his Canucks commercials and seems to feel that saving Halloween isn’t that important; Ian suffered a panic attack; they talk fave podcasts; Ian bemoans unpleasant atheists; and, finally, Dave talks Ian off the ledge in a case of “too much Trump”. Also, “Zootopia is good – you should go see it” – Ian and Dave.
Thanks for listening.
Department of Clarification of Things Discussed on the Show that Seemed to Come to No Conclusion:
The video game Dave was attempting to remember was actually Space Wars. A lot of quarters went down the drain for this:
We recently found this Harry Plinkett review of Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. As usual, it’s a good analysis of what makes for effective storytelling in film with lots of gross jokes.

The impression I get in Raiders, possibly from the Marvel Comics adaptation, is that Indiana, Alfred Molina, the other guy, and their porters have trekked cross-country for a while to get to the cave/temple, presumably because they could not do it individually (Indiana puts two tattered pieces of a map together, maybe each member had a piece?), and he had arranged for Jock to fly in and retrieve him. But if Indiana already knew the the time and place for the rendezvous – which clearly isn’t far from the cave/temple – he could’ve just dumped his partners and flown in and out in the first place…
Also, it’s sort of worrisome that Indiana travels into hostile indigenous territory with Alfred Molina, the other guy, and the porters with the intention of leaving in a plane that has room for only one passenger. Sure, Alfred Molina and the other guy are bad news, but what would Indiana have done if they hadn’t turned out to be treacherous jerks, just abandoned them on the banks of the river while he flew off into the sunset?
Dave, thanks for the horse show advice last week (And belated happy birthday!) I think Ernest-wise maybe you were thinking Vern was Bill Byrge or the equisitely-named Gailard Sartain?
RE: Victoria, I was really let down by the comic stores on Johnson St., but to be fair, I unintentionally went on Free Comic Book Day, so it was a bit of a madhouse (Except for the one store whose proprietor was not participating – which was totally fair and within his rights – but who insisted on telling EVERYONE who came in that day, at great length, WHY he was not participating). And yes, I believe the ferry is at least 3 hours, and probably isn’t worth it. Speaking of boats, one of the neatest things I experienced in Victoria was a tour of the harbour, where we actually had to cross the runway(Floatway?) for those commuter planes.
Ian, I’m surprised we haven’t heard you on The Debaters, it’s one of our favourite shows (Irrelevant Show aside, of course)! Is Steve Patterson as charming as he seems*? If you had the opportunity to participate in tapings or Comedy Festival programming in other parts of the country, would you take it, or is it not worth the hassle and expense of out-of-province travel? (For some reason I am fascinated by the logistic/boring aspects of art and performance)
*Please don’t answer if he’s actually a huge dickhole.
Sorry for the rambling, I really enjoyed this week’s episode!
Steve is as sweet as pie wrapped in a cake. Here are the episodes I’ve been on… Season One ep 4 on the topic of Spanking, Season Two ep 5 on the topic of Adoption, Season Three ep 1 on the topic of Superheroes. Season Four ep 21 on the topic of Sushi and Season Seven ep 23 on the topic of Dr. Seuss.
You could also have included Kimberley and Kaslo in your list of British Columbia’s K towns.
I would have to say Finding Nemo is my favourite Pixar film. The underwater animation effects are spectacular. Watching it on the big screen was a very, shall we say, immersive experience. Great biodiversity of characters. Great voice acting. Really loved the character of Dory. I’m looking forward to Finding Dory. Hope it works.
Agree that Zootopia is good. I liked the cop teams up with con man to solve a criminal conspiracy (White Collar meets the X-Files!?) I thought it had surprisingly intelligent socio-political themes, like Animal Farm, only (spoiler alert) ultimately optimistic about our ability to co-exist in a multiethnic society. At the point in the story where one group was being scapegoated (and no, it wasn’t the goats), I couldn’t help but think of Muslims…but you could substitute any group that politicians and internet trolls blame for society’s woes: blacks, feminists, the LGBTQ community, gun control advocates, environmentalists.
And was it just me, or did that political animal with the bouffant hair-do remind anyone else of Donald Trump and his hair? The writers couldn’t have predicted Trump’s run for office when they wrote their script. Sadly, there will always fear-mongering power grabbers around, but good on Disney for teaching young audiences to question authority! (Oh, and follow your dreams, of course.)
