It’s time to boldly go where a 1960s TV show as gone before.
Let’s take a long look at this 1979 film as your hosts Jason Dedrick, Eric Fell and Vicky Van follow their Prime Directive out of prime time and onto the big screen with Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
Warning: Things get a little grizzly. Picture by Eric Fell.
And if you don’t think it all feels long enough, here are some more scenes.
A Romulan Ale is enjoyed. If you’d like to make one, follow this link for the recipe.
They make up a tribute drink: the Kirk You! Want to make it?
- Put a rock in a glass
- Put ice on the rock.
- Put ginger ale on the ice and the rock.
The producer’s wife didn’t try this one because… there’s a rock in it. The hosts advise you to drink this slowly – the length of time it takes a shuttle to get to the Enterprise.
If you make the Kirk You! or make up one of your own, please send a picture to sneakyd@sneakydragon.com by following this link! Even if you don’t, we’d still love to hear from you. Also let us know what you think of the show and if you have any suggestions for future films. May the Force be with you!

Everything you said about Star Trek: The Motion Picture is true – it’s overlong, the pacing drags, there’s barely any plot and moments of genuine drama are few and far between.
And yet… I freakin’ LOVE this movie! Even though the next three films in the series are superior, there’s just something about this maiden voyage that hits home emotionally and overcomes the film’s many and obvious flaws. I think it lies in the parallel between the old crew coming back together and the old cast being reunited – there’s an awareness that they may not have what it takes anymore, might not pull this one off that just has me rooting both for the Enterprise AND the, ahem, ‘motion picture’ from the get go.
Loving the podcast, folks – may there be many more to come. And may I suggest Galaxy Quest for a future episode? After all, it IS the best Star Trek movie!
