That was an interesting first segment of “Horse Bits.” (How about a spin-off segment about mouth tack called “Bit Bits”?) After hearing about the evolutionary advantage of horses having large spleens, I wondered if any groups of humans have larger spleens as well. I did a search and there is a nomadic fishing people in Southeast Asia called the Bajau (pronounced “be joe”). They spend a lot of time free-diving in the ocean for food and their spleens are 50% larger than those of their non-diving neighbours which allows them to spend more time holding their breath while underwater.
I’d subtitle this episode “Rita Got Greedy.” If she hadn’t gotten so caught up in building fancy houses, acquiring land and horses, and going off on extended leaves to attend horse shows, her subordinate might not have stumbled across that bogus account when she looked into the town’s bank statements. I feel sorry for the townsfolk whose tax money was stolen and who lost work because of her. A lot of the blame has to fall on the elected civic officials who failed to see that when it came to the town’s finances, things were just not adding up!
Wow – that was another plot worthy of a Coen Brothers movie. Not so much a dazzlingly clever criminal enterprise as everyone around the crook being incredibly gullible and intimidated.
I had to wonder if Dave’s claim to ‘know nothing about horses’ might have been a slight exaggeration, given his past life as a farrier?
Dave, when you were talking about the pronunciation of ‘comptroller’ around 5:30, you used a word I didn’t recognise. ‘Vanire’? Can you explain this please? I tried Google, but it’s insisting I must mean ‘vampire’, ‘veneer’, or ‘van hire’ – and I NEED to know! 🙂
Hope you both enjoy a break from Horse Mysteries, and look forward to season 2.
haha yes, I think he was using that new pronunciation for vampire.
D’oh! I’m slow sometimes… 🙂
