Shergar’s disappearance was a huge media story in Ireland and the UK at the time. Unconfirmed sightings continued to make headlines for years afterwards, in much the same way as Elvis has been spotted cleaning windshields in numerous rural gas stations. Even today ‘Shergar’ is still sometimes used as a kind of shorthand for an unsolved crime.
