It’s that time again! Another Sneaky Dragon links post, another dollar. (Okay, no dollar.)
Ian and I visited Seattle last weekend for the Emerald City Comicon and recorded a couple of episodes of Sneaky Dragon while we were there. Our first guest was Branwyn Bigglestone from Image comics, well-known inventor of Spawn.
I don’t blame Branwyn for that movie. I am a little raw at her about it though.
Ian felt that taking our lives into our hands by venturing into a barbaric country with no health care was reason enough to run an old Participaction ad:
What do you think of that, America? Canadians used to be encouraged to keep in shape so we didn’t bog down our inadequately funded, Socialist medical system! In your faces, fatties!
Of course, Branwyn cured AIDS, but do you remember those terrible days when the disease ran rampant and everyone had AIDS?
Terrible, terrible days…and the music. Ugh.
Both Branwyn and I spent a month on a sweets fast. This is the sort of video cruel friends were always sending us. I don’t know why Ian had it so close at hand.
Mucho chocolato! Somehow it’s even more cruel en espanol.
We talked a little bit about Marvel’s special macrame owl covers from the 1970s. I thought Ian might link to some images of those impressive covers, but no, he linked to this instead:
I guess it’s understandable that he linked to this. Everyone remembers the Peruvian sweat shop controversy that marred the Marvel macrame owl covers.
Why did I go on a month long sweets fast? Because of my role model Cathy!
ACK!
Branwyn’s a bit of a gym rat and I’m a bit of a gym mouse. Jack Lalanne was a gym mastadon.
Laugh if you want, but he was right.
I don’t know why it is. There are plenty of well-known Franco-Belgium comics series – Tin Tin, Asterix, The Smurfs, to name a few – but Ian seems obsessed with Lucky Luke! Lucky Luke this, Lucky Luke that! We had Lucky Luke coming out of our ears. So naturally:
If someone had been on the ball, they would have named the dog Rin Tan Tan, which would have been an amusing nod to Tin Tin’s French pronunciation. Also, speaking as an ex-horseshoer, Lucky Luke’s horse sure needs his feet trimmed.
Boy, I sure enjoy putting these things up here!
I heard her say it! Honest!
Branwyn was a precocious child and while the rest of us were reading Archie comics and sniggering at Mad magazine, she was reading Bill Mauldin:
Bill Mauldin was a pretty great war cartoonist, but I like his book about the returning vets, Coming Home, even more. It’s very interesting and sad.
She was also reading underground comix like ones from Last Gasp:
I love the TV news. They never get it.
Branwyn lived in Daly City for a while during her punk rock days. Ian found this video to remind her of the good old days.
I think I saw Branwyn cruising by the hamburger stand in that clip!
Branwyn was part of the Bay Area punk revival when bands like Green Day re-discovered the punk sounds of the late seventies.
I’m not much of a Green Day fan. I was sort of there the first time round. I saw The Dead Kennedys at the York Theatre in Vancouver in the mid-Eighties. Branwyn saw Jello Biafra get the shit beaten out of him. Ian acted with him in a low budget film shot in Vancouver called The Widower.
One of us came out ahead on that, but I’m not sure who!
For some reason we quoted this song, so Ian had to post the video:
Ian insists that we mentioned this as well.
Two turntables and a microphone? Well, if we’re going to play ofay hip hop math, I’ll raise you three MCs and one DJ.
Branwyn spilled the beans on Richard Starkings. Oh, the stories she told! Richard will be our guest on the next episode of Sneaky Dragon, but here’s a little taster:
Have you seen Michael Caine in the movie Get Carter? That’s the real Richard Starkings!
Ian revealed the little known fact that Mitt Romney wrote Richie Rich comics in the eighties. What were they like?
Apparently they were silly.
You know you’ve been waiting for it. Biggletron vs Margaret Cho:
Arm wrestlers of the world unite!
Branwyn didn’t quit eating sweets and desserts just for the heck of it. She did it to raise money to support At the Crossroads and the work they do with homeless youth. What do they do exactly? Watch and see:
Branwyn also supports Homeless Youth Alliance. Another group doing great work in the Bay Area. Help support Branwyn help support homeless youth!
And on that wholesome note we come to the end of this weeks links post. See you next time!
