Hello, Sneaky friends! New episode = new links. I can’t put it any more succinctly than that. So, let’s get this starty parted!
We were joined this week by Pia Guerra, the talented artist, co-creator of Y:The Last Man, wife of Ian and…voice-over artist???
Of course, as a comic creator, Pia wears an evening dress and a tiara like a proper lady while she draws. Another cartoonist who dresses like a proper gentleman is Seth.
Of course, while he’s drawing, Seth has to protect his expensive, tailored suits. The answer? Boiler suits, natch, as witnessed in this video:
Somehow we always seem to bring up a subject that we talked about the week before. This time it was Gilligan’s Island. Ian needs no other excuse to play the opening theme to Gilligan’s Planet.
Gilligan’s Planet??? The very concept is the definition of threadbare. Also, it looks like there are two comedy reliefs – always a mistake.
We referenced William Conrad and the TV show Cannon three times! That’s worth a clip:
Am I alone in thinking that’s mean? William Conrad needed a big body for his big voice. Geez, Nick at Nite, put it back in your pants. We all know you’re great, you big bully.
Pia doubted that there were any famous stars with red hair. Ian destroyed her argument with one name. ONE NAME!
*dusts off hands* And that settles that!
I complained about every character in modern movies being too perfect and Ian brought up Denise Richards as a nuclear physicist in The World Is Not Enough.
I think this movie proves my point: in the movie the nuclear physicist is great at her job, great looking as well as a resourceful thinker and near superspy. In reality, the actress playing the character is barely competent at her job. *dusts off hands* And that settles that!
We record Sneaky Dragon each week at Hellkitty Studios. Not to be confused with…
You don’t have to watch the whole clip. I didn’t. Why did you post such a long clip, Ian? Ian? IAN? I think he’s fallen asleep.
We talked about Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. (Gee,we seem to talk about that movie a lot.) I brought up this film as its obvious predecessor.
You know, that’s not a very good trailer. The actual movie feels like it’s moving at about a hundred miles an hour and is lots of fun.
I was extolling Portland during the show and Ian asked me to name three great things about Portland. First, Voodoo Doughnuts:
Pretty funny commercial, but why do they even have to advertise? All day long there is a line up around the block outside their store.
Next, Little Big Burger. Watch as their restaurant is miraculously built in a minute and a half:
And they say the Pacific Northwest is laid back! One of the great things about Little Big Burger is Camden’s Catsup. Oh, and also the Fry Sauce. Mmmm-mmm.
Last, and certainly not least, the amazing Powell’s City of Books. A truly remarkable book store in Portland:
I couldn’t have said it better myself. Thanks, Robert! (Whoever you are.)
I told a story of staying in a small town in Northern BC with one movie theatre, playing this movie:
Apparently select theatres meant theatres in the middle of nowhere.
We talked a little bit about Archie Christian comics. You remember those weird comics, right? Ian thought that was a great reason to link to a blog by Kliph Nesteroff that gives the whole history of the Spire Comics line that originally published those comics and whole bunch more. Click here for the link. It’s a great read. Also, it seems that Dragons are EVIL!
A movie about machines turning against man directed by Michael Crichton? Westworld, right? No, Runaway!
Part of that movie was filmed where Ian and I grew up. That scene with Tom Selleck in front of the house is so evocative of my old neighbourhood. Nostalgia!
See you next time!
