Hi, everybody! Ian has found some great links related to our most recent episode, which was a special one because we had guests! That’s right, we we’re joined by Eric Fell, Allen Morrison and Shaun Stewart from the Justice Pals podcast. This time, with five people in the room, there was way less of our usual nerdy subjects. No – wait. No, the same as the usual. Nerd-o-rama. Let’s go!
First up, Ian described our coming together in terms of comic book superhero team ups. I can’t remember exactly which superhero teams. Legion of Superheroes? Justic League of America? Superfriends? Whatever it was, the subject of Earth 2 was brought up as well. But not this Earth 2:
Earth 2, everybody, Earth 2! Also known as Earth Earth. You know, when I watch a trailer I kind of have the expectation that I will know what the show is going to be about. It’s interesting the that trailer took it in a completely different direction. I started to think the show was about two different groups of people: one group who decided to go down to a planet’s surface and take their chances; and another group who decided to stay on the spaceship and remain safe. Then the group who went down to the planet have the greatest time ever while the people on the spaceship face nothing but death and danger. Now that would be a great show!
Nor was it this Earth 2!
We also talked about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and how they fit into the Marvel Universe vis a vis Daredevil.
Is that a hard voice over to do? That sort of Asian half-whisper thing? I wonder. I guess I’ll walk around talking like that for a day and I’ll let you know.
Speaking of Mutant Ninja Turtles, one of the creators, Kevin Eastman, is auctioning off the contents his entire studio.
You can see the plexiglass walls, but not the large exercise wheel in that video.
Eric spent a great deal of time talking about octopuses. A great deal. I don’t want to go into it here, but they’re very special to him. Here’s a song for Eric:
Did anyone else notice that it’s a SQUID??? What the hell, people!
We spent some time talking about the Richard Donner version of Superman II, which would have been great if the producers hadn’t got cold feet and hacked part of it up for the first film. Here’s a short clip from Donner’s version that shows that Richard Lester didn’t bring the humour into the movie the way a lot of people say – more a general incoherence.
I love Margot Kidder as Lois Lane and Christopher Reeve’s Superman can’t be beat. (also, I was just kidding about Lester. I know he was criticized for bringing too much comedy into Superman II.)
With three North Delta boys doing the podcast, the old Sungod Arena had to come up in the conversation. Anyone who learned to ice skate in North Delta went to the Sungod for lessons.
That’s also where the commencement ceremonies were held when I went to high school. They removed the ice for that though. Although the ice would have made it way more fun.
During the show, we also talked about TV shows like Lost and Alcatraz and other shows I’ve never seen. Here’s the trailer for Alcatraz:
Finally I know what the show is about! I kept seeing ads for it at the movies during Christmas, but they never explained what the damn thing was about. Still, it looks pretty silly.
We talked about this too on the show. Here’s one for my daughter, who cried big, globulous tears when Doyle died on Angel:
Goodbye, Doyle, we hardly knew ye.
We had some fun during the show when Ian and Eric listed the ridiculous history of the Flash character. I’d always thought there was just one. It turns out that there’s, like, three hundred!
Or three. I’m not sure anymore.
Eric talked about Tron: Legacy, whose Daft Punk soundtrack he admires. I agreed with him, but after hearing this clip I take back my endorsement. Too beepy and boopy.
You know, the first Tron wasn’t that great either. Everyone talks about it like it was a big deal, but I thought it was pretty disappointing at the time. (I’ll admit I haven’t seen it since that time.)
Ian felt that Daft Punk goes well Buster Keaton movies, but I insisted that carefully synching up 808 State with Chaplin produced great results.
Synch that up with the kid and it’s pure gold. Although Pacific State goes well with The Immigrant.
Ian brought up Skeeter from the Muppet Babies. Whatever happened to you, Skeeter?
Skeeter, come home! How come Rowlph’s voice sounds so normal? He sounds like a voice from a Charlie Brown special. Fozzy’s voice was clearly the inspiration for Peter from Family Guy.
This was the answer to a show quiz question: What Chevy Chase movie was a sequel to Benji?
WHAT??? There are real actors in this movie!!! Who thought this was a good idea?
Ian called Intellivision a terrible game console to the outrage of his fellow podcasters! Witness the awesomeness that is Astrosmash!
What I remember Intellivision for though is the superiority of its sports games. Watch a little bit of this Intellivision football:
and then watch this Atari game:
Admittedly they came out a couple of years apart and the Atari improved with time, but I’m talking about how it seemed when I was a kid.
And wth that controversial conclusion, I’ll say goodbye till next time!
