No more crickets chirping over at the Episode Fourteen page of Full Marx, I broke the silence as you mentioned during Episode 365 of Sneaky Dragon!
That version of Romeo and Juliet might be the best film adaptation of a Shakespearean play ever. My sentimental favourite, for sure. It’s got great Italian locations, lush costumes, talented cast, cool sword fights, passionate love scenes, catchy romantic theme (later made into a pop song, “A Time For Us”). At my high school, I cut class several years in a row so I could sneak into the auditorium to watch it when they showed it to the Grade 12s on an old reel projector. (This was before VHS, so it was the only way you could see it.) Every showing, when Romeo first made his entrance, there was an audible gasp from the female students (followed by a chuckle from everyone at their reaction) because he was so darn cute.
Speaking of great love themes, Doctor Zhivago has one too, “Lara’s Theme” which was made into the pop song, “Somewhere My Love”. Last week, my sister and I were helping my cousin go through the belongings of my aunt who passed away earlier this year. He asked us if we could name the song her music box plays. It was that one. “A Time For Us” was also a popular music box theme. That could be a list in itself: movies whose songs became music box hits. Love Story, The Godfather, Beaches, Titanic, Beauty and the Beast…
I am really enjoying listening to you two go through everyone’s movie top ten (or whatever!) lists, including and especially MY list (Ep. 362, the original SIXTH anniversary show!) And speaking of my list, the second film on it was David Mamet’s “The Spanish Prisoner”, and, with Ricky Jay, the amazing magician and sleight of hand artist, recently passing away, I thought I’d mention that he is in that movie, playing the part of Joe’s good friend. Another reason to check it out, David!
About the lead role in Blazing Saddles, Cleavon Little played that part, and he was perfect for the role! You’re right: Richard Pryor would have played it so much differently. When you talked about that infamous moment in the movie when the cowboys are eating beans around the campfire, I had to laugh. It reminded me what a huge kick my stepdad used to get out of what he called “the bean scene”. Cracked him up just thinking about it… and he was a reasonably refined man. You just never know about humor…! Except that you’ve got to have it! 🙂

Great show again . As to the movie list, you guys are right on….Stripes is 2/3 a great movie, the last third is saved only by the appearance of Joe Flaherty. It’s so great to hear that you guys are SCTV fans. Growing up, I’d wait for SNL to end so I could get to SCTV…. It seemed that in my high school, only my best friend and I even knew of it. Loved it more than the early SNL. Dr. Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia and Romeo and Juliet–I never saw them either. The two Python films– YES!!!! agree with all you guys said. Return of the Pink Panther-brilliant!
Dave, give the Commitments a watch–as Ian said, great movie, especially if you like stories about band origins. I can’t stand U2 either, but I loved the Commitments.
Dave mentioned Schitt’s Creek– another great show– I just finished season 1 (yes we have it on Netflix in the States).
Anyway, As I listen –while driving– I have so many other comments I’d like to make–but I can’t take notes, so they often slip out of my 56 year old noodle before I get home.

Danny, I have the same problem! Too much to take in and remember! I’m usually driving and talking back to(or with, depending on how you look at it!) Ian and David! I mean really yacking it up! Then forget the things I wanted to comment on here… 🙂
