Sneaky Dragon Episode 253

Ciao, Sneakers! We are sorry to tell you, but Ian received some bad news on Thursday and could not do the show this week so Dave is flying solo for this episode.

Please be gentle to our lonely Sneaker as he tries out one of the sidecast ideas mentioned on the question show: Mix Tape! Dave has taken one of the mix tapes he made for a show listener and has deconstructed the whole process: how he chooses songs; how he likes the songs to flow; and how to make a great mix tape (in Dave’s opinion). Plus lots of music trivia and typically opinionated Dave-isms.

The songs covered on this episode include:

Side One:
Eric Matthews – “Fanfare” from It’s Heavy In Here
The Bubble Puppy – “Hurry Sundown” from A Gathering of Promises
Sparks – “This Town Ain’t Big Enough For The Two Of Us” from Kimono My House
Preston School of Industry – “Monkey Heart And The Horses’ Leg” from All This Sounds Gas
The Bamboo Shoot – “The Fox Has Gone To Ground” from Rubble 3: Nightmares In Wonderland
Destroyer – “Beggars Might Ride” from Streethawk: A Seduction
The Mohawk Lodge – “Wear ‘Em Out” from Wildfires
Field Music ‘ “In Context” from Tones of Town
No Fun – “Ambivalence (Gets Me)” from Snivel
Sufjan Stevens – “Jacksonville” from Illinois
Belle and Sebastian – “The Stars of Track and Field” from If You’re Feeling Sinister

Side Two
Stereolab – “Percolator” from Emperor Tomato Ketchup
Jefferson Airplane – “Watch Her Ride” from After Bathing At Baxter’s
The Super Friendz – “Karate Man” from Mock Up, Scale Down
Midlake – “Roscoe” from The Trials of Van Occupanther
Emitt Rhodes – “Really Wanted You” from Mirror
The Real Kids – “All Kindsa Girls” from Mojo Presents I Love New York Punk
Elliot Smith – “Baby Britain” from XO
Taylor Hollingsworth – “Keep Coming Back” from Uncut’s Rip This Joint
The Cryan Shames – “The Little Town I Used To Live In” from A Scratch In The Sky
The War on Drugs – “Red Eyes” from Lost In The Dream

Thanks for listening.

All my prayers and good vibes are going out to you Ian. I don’t know what you’re going through but I’m hoping everything turns out well for you in the end.

  2. Hi,
I got the news that my cat Charlie has terminal cancer about an hour before we record the show. I’ve talked about losing my other cat August about a month ago and this coming so close is hard to process. I thank David for covering for me and for everyone’s patience.

Very interesting episode. Really enjoyed it! It’s definitely very different without Ian but I think it is very important for everyone to do what they need to do to coupe with the different things that happen in their life. I love the idea of getting fans stories and making mix tapes to them! I hope you two do something with that In the future!

    Thanks!
    Reid

  4. Dave, thanks so much for doing the show this week. We’d all have missed you, out here in Dragonland. Ian, so sorry to hear your news. It’s going to be hard, but love and laughter are the greatest healers* – and you guys have plenty of both. Peace and love – Chris
    *Apart from heroin, obviously…

  5. Three things:
    1. Virtual hugs to Ian, Pia and Charlie. My thoughts are with you. Enjoy this time you have together.
    2. Dave – brilliant show. Thank you. Love to hear you talk about music.
    3. Steely Dan – meh. It’s a guy thing.

  6. Great show, Dave – a fascinating insight into your musical tastes! So many artists I’ve never heard or, let along heard before. I don’t get Steely Dan either, but I like Dire Straits AND Bryan Adams, so what do I know? πŸ˜‰
Ian, I hope you and Pia are doing OK and that Charlie isn’t in pain – he’s lucky he has caring people to help him be comfortable in his last days. Take care of yourselves.

  7. So sorry to hear the bad news about Charlie, Ian. My best to you and Pia during this sad time.

Interesting show, Dave. Thanks for going ahead with the podcast. I enjoyed hearing the samples from songs I’d never have otherwise run across.

In that spirit, I’d like to recommend two 2016 music documentaries to you and your listeners which I recently ran across on cable TV. One you might like and one you might hate. You can decide which is which!

Ron Howard’s The Beatles: Eight Days A Week, The Touring Years. A fun look at the early days of the band (1962-1966) with old news and concert footage and archival interviews, and new interviews from Paul, Ringo and other music insiders about that era.

Larry Weinstein’s The Devil’s Horn. “…explores the sax’s longstanding curse that stemmed from the difficult life of its mad inventor [Adolphe Sax], and is still said to affect saxophonists who fall prey to the instrument’s dark powers.” IMDb.com

  8. Dave,

Excellent episode. I love this kind of thing, having obsessively made tapes for people over the years. I relate to a lot of the points you bring up when assembling. The one rule I always impose on myself in contrast when making a mix is I never use a song that would appear first on an album proper as the first song in a mix. I love Matthew’s ‘Fanfare’ but I would’ve used it elsewhere. It’s just my own thing.

I’m compiling the songs as I can to hear them as the mix you intended. A lot of these bands I know of and like but only from a distance (not having purchased or listened to thoroughly myself) so it was great to hear these songs examined and in context. Having not thought much about White Denim the first time I heard them I have a real reason to give them another chance. I’m all for a spin-off podcast like this. Maybe a seasonal episode? I know when I make a mix of songs I like for someone I get a little burned out on those tunes. I’d hate for you to suffer the same way. Congratulations on a 2 hour solo show! Thanks so much.

Thinking about you Ian and family and wishing you the best in this rough time.

    1. That’s a curious limitation, Leo. Unlike you, I will unscrupulously use opening songs because I want songs that will start mixes with a bang. But each to his own! πŸ™‚

      Glad you enjoyed the show!
