Sneaky Dragon Episode 244

Sneaky-Dragon-Episode-244

Hola, Sneakers! Welcome back to the show that gives and gives, and what do we ask in return? Nothing! And what do we give?

Well, that’s also nothing.

This week on the show: things get hot – possibly hot enough to cause temporary insanity (listen late in the show for Dave to dis Kathleen Turner); after that, things get Trumpy as Ian wonders if Trump is serious, going crazy or wants out of the Presidential race; we do know that his becoming President will involve some sort of baby-related legislation; Dave thinks we should build a wall; is Trump a by-product of America’s fascination with reality TV – discuss; Dave says “Yes!” to the Coens Hail Caesar! – Ian is a firm “No” – in the sense that he liked everything about the movie…except the movie; who can forget the Aquabelles (well, Dave apparently); The Portrait of Bruce Villanch; have Ian and dave talked about Watchmen before; Dave questions the Netflix model of binge watching new programs; Ian would like to point out that he works; Dave isn’t too worried about the Rapture; Ian prefers the Blondie’s version of the Rapture; speaking of Blondie, what about those Bumstead Billions; speaking of Blondie, what about comic strips; Ian and Dave don’t want you to hate Stranger Things; Dave wants you to hate saxophones and also Romancing the Stone; and, finally, Ian wants you to know that everything is okay with Mary-Anne.

And please don’t forget to think up some questions for our upcoming Listener’s Questions Episode. As per usual, we’ll have goody bags for all participants and a grand prize that we’ll raffle off to one lucky questioneer. Every question equals one chance so the more questions you ask – the more chances you have to win! Contact us via Twitter, Facebook, email (you can click on the boxes on the right hand side of the screen) or write to us via the comments section here on the website.

Thanks for listening.

Dave wishes the movie was as good as this trailer! Holy cow!

  1. Maybe Dave didn’t find Kathleen Turner’s look in Romancing the Stone attractive because it was actually meant to appeal more to female audience members! As I recall, her romance novelist character spent a lot of the movie mud-spattered and bedraggled, but in her cleaned-up moments she looked quite natural. That was a nice change of pace back then from the 1980s big permed hair, heavy make-up and shoulder pads look.

The heroine in a good rom-com needs to appeal to women — perhaps even more so than to men — so they can put themselves in her shoes (even if they are inappropriate for jungle travel). If she’s overly pretty or perfect, you are less likely to care about her problems. Then you are less likely to recommend the movie to your gal-pals.

Ian mentioned the film noir Body Heat. Dave may like the femme fatale look of Kathleen Turner’s character here better as it is definitely calculated to appeal to guys. It probably inspired William Hurt’s most energetic performance on film and may be why he looks exhausted in every movie he’s made ever since!

  2. I am firmly in the Dave camp regarding binge watching. The ability to digest en episode or issue of a work can improve my enjoyment and understanding of it immensely. Binge watching encourages me to focus more on getting through it. The reward becomes the crossing off of the list, rather than the story.

  3. Really enjoyed this show! The Trump stuff, to me, is so spot-on, and it’s fun to hear you two discuss his mental capacity. Ian’s comment sums it up:”He’s a dum-dum!!!” and, also as Ian pointed out, there’s almost too much to even pick out ONE THING that’s awful or ridiculous. That was a super observation… so, so true.
David, I wish I had a dollar for every time the lyric “Neither a borrower, nor a lender be; do not forget, stay out of debt, ” has run through my mind over the past 35 or so years, of course from Gilligan’s Island, even though, like you I haven’t actually watched the show in that long or longer! I’ve often thought how funny it is where we get our true education and so much of our cultural knowledge, right?
And lastly, Ian, when you use the phrase “all make-’em-ups”, I just lose it every time!
You two are really fantastic together!
    Thanks for another fun show!

  4. herbert marcuse was a real guy, part of the frankfurt school – along with horkheimer! – and “father of the new left. the communist plot in the hail caesar! fail was stupid and mildly insulting; the cohens may feel some conflict over their jewishness and the jewish aspect of the mccarthy witch-hunt and subsequent blacklist, but it’s an area they should stay away from. a somewhat difficult task as one of their foremost modes is as purveyors of golden age hollywood pastiche.
but to my reason for writing here: where do i send questions and/or answers for your 120th show? your email link above seemed to lead nowhere, which is in no way a comment on you.
