Well, another podcast, another link post. Ian has found lots of links related to our conversations in the latest episode. So let’s not waste any time.
First up, related to Ian’s attempts as a child to walk through walls, here’s the episode that inspired such childish japes in which Superman wills himself to walk through a wall. Kooky guy!(Unfortunately this clip doesn’t feature that part of the original show.) Enjoy it anyway.
Lois Lane–The Mysterious Cube by gagsta55
Okay, two things: first, worst…rope…tying…ever; second, is it just me, or did crooks always seem a little too pleased with themselves in those days. Talk about smug!
Okay, enough of that. Let’s move on to the classics: Hanna-Barbera cartoons. Ugh, actually I always found these kind of boring as a kid and resented the time they took away from the far superior Bugs Bunny cartoons. Still, let’s tap our feet to this little ditty: The Yogi Bear Theme.
What the…Is there even a tune there? Yeesh, even the music was second-rate! Terrible.
Let’s have a palate cleanser after that: here’s the Flash passing through a wall. Unlike Superman, who uses the power of positive thinking to travel through solid objects, the Flash “vibrates his molecules”.
Wow, far out, man. I don’t remember that show. I must not have watched it. God knows I watched my share of junk, but I was spared that one!
Okay, that wasn’t much of a palate cleansing. Maybe this will help A link to Kate Beaton’s wonderful website Hark! A Vagrant for her fresh update of Wonder Woman. Someone at DC, hire her this minute! Click here for the link.
She’s just so good. Really, go buy her book. Right now.
Allright, now I’m feeling better. Things are looking up…everything’s going to be okay – whuh!
Geez Louise, Ian, what kind of a link post is this??? My eyes!!!
Next up, Ian and I talked a bit about mummies, so naturally this conversation turned to breakfast cereals, you know how that tends to happen, and Ian brought up Yummy Mummy cereal. If you’re interested in Yummy Mummy cereal and about four thousand other discontinued cereals you should head on over to this site (click here) where you will find an amazing array of breakfast cereals. Seriously, I’ve never heard of about 98% of this stuff. (It was all we could do to get my mom to buy us Froot Loops when I was a kid.)
Ian and I almost came to blows arguing about the role of Canada’s Supreme Court and its judicial “independence”. Here’s a link (click here) to a list of frequently asked questions about Canada’s Supreme Court. Knock yourself out. (It does seem odd to me, though, that “how to obtain information about the Surpreme Court in braille” is a frequently asked question. I guess that goes to show just how frequently any questions about it are asked.)
Videos! Here’s a video link. Oh goody! And it’s to a great song. One of those life affirming Schoolhouse Rock songs of American history that made such things as the gory path of Manifest Destiny seem great.
Well, that was pretty great. The guy in charge of the Schoolhouse Rock series, Bob Dorough, has quite a history in music – a long career as jazz vocalist and pianist, writing with Miles Davis, producing the Holy Modal Rounders Good Taste Is Timeless and arranging vocals on the Fugs seminal It Crawled Into My Hands, Honest. He also wrote an album of songs called Too Much Coffee Man with a cover by Shannon Wheeler.
Allright – enough about my obessions – next up, a video about Canada’s most sacred animal…no, I thought this was about the beaver. Okay, this is Canada’s third most sacred animal – after the superhero character, Wolverine.
Don’t use the name “Spirit Bear” in front of a Canadian – unless you want a fist fight.
Ian and I talked a bit about the Alan Thicke Show and Ian dug up this great clip of Frank Zappa on The Thicke of the Night. Thicke wasn’t much of an interviewer, but the way the seating is arranged doesn’t make for a very comfortable setting either. Pish tosh, Mr. Set Designer, pish tosh.
Zappa always seemed kind of smug to me and this hasn’t changed my mind. (Maybe he knew this kind of crap wasn’t going to sell a single album and he was probably right.)
As I mentioned above, Ian and I talked about mummies – leading us into breakfast cereals, but also the movie The Mummy, starring Canadian thespian, Brendan Fraser.
Good trailer. I’d forgotten the movie featured George Harrison.
In celebration of Ian’s iPhone, which is apparently a huge Rush fan, Rush:
I didn’t bother watching that video because there is no power on Earth that can make me.
Ian had quite a lot to say about Donkey Kong and its various iterations, and so does this fellow:
At least it wasn’t called Donkey Hung.
And on the subject of Donkey Kong, everyone played it on their ColecoVision console (well, all the cool people did).
Look at that state of the art computer animation! Ho-lee Moses! (Somehow they left out Duckhunt from that commercial though – must have been an oversight.)
Finally, on the subject of jumping off roofs (pretty common podcast fodder), I mentioned an episode of The White Shadow, in which a minor character suddenly becomes important when he jumps off a roof while “tripping” on PCP. Ian felt that we should play the jazzy theme song to the show and I concur heartily! (Keep your eyes open for the kid with the glasses in the truck. He’s the one who jumped off the roof, I think.)
Wow, basketball is a tough game. You break your leg and your career is over.
Okay, that’s all the links we have for this week. We hope you enjoyed them. Remember to write a comment here on the website if you want to get in touch with us. It’s good to know people are reading this stuff.
