Sneaky Dragon Episode 34

With David M. Indie rock superstar David M. of No Fun drops by Sneaky Dragon for a conversation that goes from black and white minstrel shows to Pink Flamingos and everything in between. (Which is quite a lot if you think about it.) David tells Ian and Dave the truth about bookstores; he sings his own song; and he tells the story of his George Lucas photo-op. They also talk about David’s band, No Fun; discuss the oddness of Christmas songs; and Ian reveals James Cameron’s secret. Dave also asks his guest about his Top 10 favourite movies and the supercult film Pink Flamingos is discussed in some detail (and some of those details are disturbing). Here is a nice article about David M and No Fun by local journalist and photographer, Alex Waterhouse-Hayward. You can join the No Fun group, the No Fun: The Beatles of Surrey, on Facebook and David has a YouTube channel with lots of videos, both old and new with the odd moniker, TheDavidmnofun.

Ian and Dave don’t have a Top Ten list of favourite films, but are interested if listeners of Sneaky Dragon do. Please feel free to post your Top Ten movies in the comments section below or on our Facebook page. Any lists will be discussed on a later show, and Ian and Dave might get their shit together and have their own lists.

  1. Only 10 favourite films? You drive a hard bargain, sir, I have hundreds 🙂 If I HAD to pick a top 10 though, in no particular order of awesomesauceness:

    * BLISS (1985, dir Ray Lawrence)- awesome Australian black comedy

    * John Carpenter’s THE THING (1982)

    * John Carpenter’s PRINCE OF DARKNESS (1989) -Evil Lovecraftian shenanigans, theology and Quantum physics, what’s not to love?!

    * SMILLA’S SENSE OF SNOW (dir Billie August, 1997)

    * ANGEL HEART (1987) “Mephistopheles is SUCH a mouthful in Manhattan, Johnny”

    * Cronenberg’s THE FLY (1986)

    * WHERE THE WORLD MINE (200)- awesome musical/Gay take on a Midsummer Night’s Dream)

    * DR GIGGLES (1992)- Larry Drake as a homocidally-minded surgeon. Cheesy as all get out (“don’t worry; they’re Ouchless!”) but I just love it.

*INVASION OF THE BODYSNATCHERS (1978)- Donald Sutherland Jeff Goldblum! Leonard Nimoy! Veronica Cartwright!

*AIRPLANE! (1982) Still gloriously silly all these years later

    1. Nice list, Gavin. There’s a few I haven’t seen, but most I have. Still, only one of those films would make my personal Top Ten list.

I also find it really hard to refine a very long list of favourite films down to just ten.

If we have a couple more lists from listeners, Ian and I may talk about this on a later show.

      David

  2. Here’s my list of 10 best comedy movies in no particular order

    Blazing Saddles
    Being There
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
    Young Frankenstein
    Groundhog Day
    Trading Places
    Office Space
    Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure
    My Cousin Vinny
    Strange Brew

    1. Thanks, Paul! I like how quirky everyone’s list is. There’s only one movie on this list I haven’t seen (Being There), but I like all the other movies a lot. Still, I think there is only one that would make my personal list of Top 10 comedies.

If we can get one more Top 10 list this might make a great Sneaky Dragon segment!

      Dave

  3. I’m probably a few years too late, but am travelling through past shows and couldn’t resist listing favourite films. I don’t say these are the greatest movies ever made, but each is one I could watch over and over again. More or less in chronological order…
    The General
    City Lights
    Pinocchio
    Night of the Hunter
    Bad Day at Black Rock
    A Hard Day’s Night
    Dog Day Afternoon
    Author Author
    In and Out
    Fargo
